Welcome once more to Art on Boston. Trying to stay cool? Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Take one of our relaxing art classes, taught by local artists in a Gallery environment. Upcoming classes this week include:

Pastel Class by Alice Van Overstraeten. Learn techniques & surfaces for pastels, and create a landscape or floral. $35 includes all materials. 2-4 p.m., Sat., July 26.

Mixed Media with Watercolor, Color Pencil & Ink, by Wendy Fallon. Learn basic watercolor techniques (washes, masking, opaques), by creating small pieces of artwork embellished with color pencil & ink, and suitable for framing or note cards. $40, plus $10 materials fee. 2-5 p.m. Sun, July 27.

Encased Glass Pendant by Jeni Calkins. Create a unique pendant encasing your favorite treasures into a glass-like pendant. $60 includes all materials. 1-4pm, Sunday, July 27.

The Art House Gallery is sending five 3×3 inch canvases to up to 500 participants from around the country. Artists cover the canvases using any medium they want based on the theme of “Memories and moments.” Anyone can participate–from the seasoned artist to the person who has never even drawn a stick figure. Show will be held at Art House Gallery in Atlanta, Ga. $16 submission fee.

The City of Goodyear is developing a database of Arizona artists to be considered for its Art in Civic Spaces rotating exhibition program. Artists interested in displaying 2D and/or 3D artwork in City Hall should send contact information, resume, and up to 10 images of recent work. Images can be in slide or digital CD (JPG, 300dpi and sized at least 4”x5”) format. Include printed list of images including title, media, date and dimensions. If submitting digital CD, include thumbnail print out of all images. If submitting slides, label with artist’s name, title, and indicate top of slide. Do not send original artwork. The Gilbert Visual Art League (GVAL) invites Arizona artists to submit their original artwork for the 6th annual Fine Art Show. The show is hosted at the Gilbert Historical Museum in Gilbert, AZ and will be available for public viewing from November 8 through 22, 2208. The show is judged and juried, includes all mediums and subject matter, and features a non-juried, youth division.

 This is GVAL’s second Fine Art Show for 2008. The league chose to move the show date to November so they could coordinate with the Town of Gilbert’s annual Gilbert Days celebration. Many of the club members are Gilbert residents so the change seemed like a natural choice.

Awards will be presented at the show reception on November 16, 2008. Ribbons are awarded to the top three works in each category. In addition, a cash prize is given to Best of Show and Peoples Choice winners. Renowned painter, John Cox, will judge the show. Cox has more than thirty years fine-art experience and has hosted many solo and two-man shows.

Artists interested in submitting work can download the official call for entry at the Gilbert Visual Art League website www.gval.org. All entries must be postmarked by September 27, 2008. Acceptance letters will be mailed starting on October 10, 2008.

The Gilbert Visual Art League’s goal is to create a venue for local artists to show their work and be recognized for their talents. The league strives to increase artistic awareness and appreciation in their community and surrounding areas.

Exhibiting Artists and Artists from the Community will SALE their ART at Artistic Mystic on Fri. 10-8PM and Sat. 10-6PM July 25th and 26th –

July 15th-19th — Artists will decorate furniture with art by painting on contemporary, southwest, mystical or cultural themes.  Furniture pieces will be on sold as ART on July 18th and 19th (Fri. 10-8PM and Sat. 10-6PM)

Custom orders can be taken for specific themes on furniture brought into the gallery and commissioned for sales.  If people have a piece of furniture around their home that they’ve been meaning to decorate, bring it into Artistic Mystic and we will make it into a beautiful, specialized keepsake!

Scottsdale Art School is having a workshop for artists on financial and legal planning.  Since we have had several discussions on legalities, I suggest those interested my want to attend this workshop.  It is Jul y 23 from 8:30 - 12:30.  To register call 602-771-6502.  The cost is $10 to be paid at the door.  It is presented by Arizona Commission on the Arts. 

I am a member of the National Portrait Society and some local portrait artists are starting an Arizona Portrait Society.  We will be starting the middle of September.  If there are others interested in joining this group, please let me know and I will get paperwork to you.  

I have an ongoing class on Monday evenings in my studio.  It is $60.00 per month and students work independently with one-on-one help from me.  I currently have 4 students and there is room for 2 more.  You can work in any medium you choose.  I will be having two drawing workshops each year with one in January and one in June or July.  I will also offer one portrait workshop each year (working in oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic), the date to be determined my interest.  If there is interest in any of these classes or workshops please contact me at jeanaes@aol.com. 

For the 2009 Fine Art Show, GVAL is planning to have a float in the Gilbert Days Parade with “living” artworks displayed.  We are in need of a flatbed that can be used to build the float on top of.  We are thinking of doing Grant Woods “American Gothic” and “Whistlers Mother”  We need models and costumes as well as props.  Also, the prospectus will be going out the end of this month.
