September 2: Photography Tips for Artists - Tad Smith
Photographing your artwork can be a deciding factor when trying to get into shows and galleries, and the ability to take basic digital photographs is necessary for most artists. How to set up and take simple photos of your artwork; how to get the digital image from camera to computer; essential Photoshop techniques, such as how to resize, crop, save and email electronic photos and more. Artist, graphic designer and photographer Tad Smith (www.StudeoTad.com) explains basic techniques for all artists.
September 3: Simple Web Design for Artists - Wendy Fallon
Having a web presence for your art is not a luxury, it’s a necessity in today’s global village. Find out easy and inexpensive ways to create your own basic website, and use it as a marketing tool for clients and prospective galleries. Learn the difference between web and print photos; what colors work for the web and which don’t; and how to get your website on search engines. When you’re ready to hire a web designer, learn the right questions to ask them and how not to get ripped off. Art on Boston co-owner Wendy Fallon, also a writer and web designer (www.FallonDesigns.com and www.WendyFallon.com) gives all the details.
Sept 9: Copyright Issues for Artists - Miachelle DePiano
It’s your art, so you automatically hold the copyright, too, right? But what about work-for-hire, trademark, patents and licenses? How can teachers use copyrighted material in classes? And just because a photo is on the Internet, does that mean an artist can paint it? Find out the four questions that must be answered to decide whether or not there is copyright infringement and hear about case-specific examples. Learn how to protect your own work, and how to request copyright permission. Jewelry Designer Miachelle DePiano of Cosmopolitan Accessories (www.cosmopolitanaccessories.net ) is also a technical writer and has done extensive research in copyright issues.
Sept 10: Business Taxes for Artists - Gail Boyd
When your art goes beyond a hobby into a business, you need to know about tax laws and how they apply to small businesses and artists specifically. Find out about transactional privilege tax licenses, when to charge and collect tax, what art supplies and art business expenses you can claim. Painter Gail Boyd (GailBoyd@mac.com), a member of the Art on Boston Artists Cooperative and a retired tax attorney, will provide the information.
Business of Art cost is $20 for 1 class; or when pre-paid, $18 each for 2 to 4 classes, or $16 when all six sessions are prepaid.
Thanks for supporting the arts and for supporting Art on Boston!
